Below are the liner notes from Andy Samford's compilation cd release......

"Andy Samford - Anthology 1998-2006 “The Roland Years”

A compilation featuring the creme de la creme of Andy’s solo recordings from 98-06. Eventually the bulk of these recordings will be issued when we do the expanded editions of all the solo albums, but these are the songs that we want to get out there right away… so let’s turn it over to Andy so we can stop talking in third person….

Andy: ”After recording the Plaster album, which was my first experience working with more than a cassette 4 track recorder, I became pretty obsessed with the recording process, the layering of guitars and vocals and such, and decided to spend what was left of my “college fund” that didn’t get spent on the Plaster album to build a little home recording studio. After much research and considering what I had to spend, I decided to purchase a Roland VS1680 (with the onboard expansion cards), a pair of Event 20/20 bas studio monitors, headphones, a drum machine, and a condenser mic. I also bought a Roland analog-modeling synth which I had no clue how to use but figured I could make some cool noises with it. I bought all of this equipment, but barely had any time to use it, I still had some money left, so I quit my job so I could get some quality recording time. I never could really get the hang of programming the drum machine, but it had buttons for all of the different drums and cymbals so I became a pretty good finger drummer. While I always recorded to a click track, the timing was never perfectly precise with the drums since I was, well, playing them with my fingers…. several people commented that it sounded like a “stoned drum machine”….works for me… while I would always prefer to have live drums, the drum machine facilitated me being able to record a lot more often, and since I lived in a townhouse apartment, recording live drums just wasn’t practical all that often….5 months passed, and I was still without a job and now broke, so I had to sell the synth before finally getting another job. Eventually I got a Korg analog modeling synth, which is what you will hear on most of these tracks. So anyhow, from the time I bought the Roland in Oct ‘98 until I stopped using it as my main recording device in 2006 I recorded about 190 songs, the bulk of them over the course of 2000-01. The selections included here I would consider to be the really good stuff. Not that the rest of it sucks. Shit, how do I get out of this while still remaining somewhat humble….. hmmmm, anyhow, enjoy!!”

Disc One

01. I Wish I Was An Astronaut (recorded October 1998)

This was one of the last songs I recorded while still using a four-track cassette player. The original keyboard part on the 4-track version was recorded with a $50 Casio from Target. (You’ll hear this version eventually) So once I got the Roland studio set up, this was one of the first things I wanted to re-record. It was the first song on my first solo release, and the only thing on this collection that features my original Roland synth that I had to sell to make rent. It sounded slightly better than the $50 Casio!!

02. My Bong Is Lonely (recorded April 1999)

I think the title of this one pretty much says it all. This song has always gotten a positive response from all who have heard it.

03. Say Goodbye (recorded March 2001)

Some (well, a lot) of these songs are extremely personal, so I’d really rather not go into too many details or name any names. Let’s just say that writing and recording some of these songs helped me get through some tough times and deal with some really strong and sometimes fucked up emotions…. anyhow, I can at least say that the I recorded the rain and the birds in the intro by holding my microphone outside my apartment window one rainy morning, trying to get a good sound while not getting the mic wet.

04. More Than This (recorded March 2001)

This is sort of my uplifting-everything-is-going-to-be-okay-because-there’s-a-lot-more-to-life-than-all-of-this-bullshit song.

05. Another Way (recorded August 2000)

I included this as a nod to Tim who is so graciously providing me with all this webpage, storage, and bandwidth stuff. Until he heard the recently recorded “Dream Forever”, this was always Tim’s favorite song of mine, and I know he always preferred my original version to the version that Qualone recorded and released. As it stands, this is certainly one of my best power-pop (or as I like to call it, stoner fuzz pop) songs.

06. Green Hills Of Earth (recorded September 2000)

After I finished this song, I realized that the vocal melody reminded me a bit of The Beach Boys’ “Feel Flows”, which is cool, because that is one of my favorite songs of all time. This *might* be my favorite of all my recordings from this time-period. Certainly my favorite of the quieter ballad type songs. I recorded this song in an alternate tuning that I just sort of found by tuning the strings somewhat randomly. Unfortunately I didn’t make note of what the strings were tuned to, so it would be rather difficult for me to ever play this song again.

07. Black Sun Rising (recorded September 1999)

This was a part of my “apocalypse trilogy” that I wrote when I was starting to get needlessly paranoid about the whole Year 2000 thing… ”Hiding From Knowing” from the Telestrion album was also a part of this trilogy. I was trying to write a Kula Shaker sounding song, but it doesn’t really sound like them at all. Some of the lyrics for this song were later re-used for Telestrion’s “Lost In The Sky”.

08. Take Ahold Of Me (recorded July 2000)

I am aware that proper English would dictate that this song be titled Take A Hold Of Me, but it’s not and I don’t care, so there. I almost passed out while singing the bridge of this song. For some reason, which to this day I’m not sure why, I left this song off of my “23″ album, although I think it’s better than many of the songs that are on that album.

09. With You (recorded July 2001)

This song features a really abrupt time/tempo change from verse to chorus, and if you listen closely enough you’ll hear that I recorded the sections separately and then pasted them together. It was *almost* seamless…. LOL…. the synth part at the end reminds me of Ween.

10. Forever I’ll Wait (recorded August 2000)

This is sort of my attempt to rip off “Because” by The Beatles.

11. Around (recorded July 2001)

This has always been a favorite of mine. It’s sort of “prog-pop”. Kinda…maybe…. anyhow, it definitely features my most ambitious vocal arrangement on the bridge where I attempted to some Beach Boys type stuff, there’s probably about 6 or 7 vocal tracks there….

12. Drop Me When I Fall (recorded July 2000)

Another song recorded on a rainy day, and I decided to stick my mic out the window and get some good thunderstorm/rain sounds while hoping that I didn’t ruin my mic in the process. I recorded the rain track in one pass, so the thunder just sort of happened where it happened, but I think nature did a good job of accompanying me, as she seemed to know right when to thunder. Like “Green Hills Of Earth”, I recorded this song in an alternate tuning, which I made no notes of, so this is another song that shan’t be played again.

13. I Woke Up In Love This Morning (recorded August 2000)

I have recorded many cover songs over the years, all of which will be featured on a Covers compilation that I will release here eventually. This is a cover of a Partridge Family (yes, the fucking Partridge Family) song, that was recorded by request of my super cool friend Tim. I had never even heard the original before he played it for me, but as soon as I heard it, I thought it was a pop masterpiece, and was definitely willing to give it a go, putting my stoner-pop-guitar-fuzz stamp on it. You think this is something, wait until you hear the Osmonds song that Tim & I are going to collaborate on in the near future.

14. ASB (May 2000)

I became nostalgic for a girl I had a crush on in high school, and decided to write a six minute psychedelic epic about her 7 years after the fact. Unfortunately even in this era of MySpace and Facebook and what have you, I still have not been able to track her down and reconnect with her to see how life is treating her. Hopefully she is doing well, wherever she is….

15. Fractured Sunrise (recorded September 1999)

One of the very few times I’ve recorded with an acoustic (because I don’t own one), this is my semi-acoustic instrumental that is kind of a cross between Ace Frehley’s “Fractured Mirror” and Black Sabbath’s “Laguna Sunrise”. Thus….”Fractured Sunrise”.

Disc Two

01. Journey Into Reality (recorded February 2001)

If not for a power failure this song would not exist. I was about halfway done with it and it wasn’t sounding anything like what you will hear. I was not in the habit of saving regularly on the Roland, and it doesn’t auto-save or anything like that, so when the power cut off for a couple of minutes, I lost all I had recorded, at least a couple of hours work getting this song started. This was the first and last time that I ever lost anything due to power failure. Anyhow, I was definitely frustrated, but determined to get this new song down, so I started over, and took a bit of a different approach with the structure and the guitar parts and stuff, and it turned out to be excellent, one of my best songs, and the one that I think is a good overall representation of my variety of styles.

02. All For You (recorded September 2000)

It’s all here for you.

03. I Wanted You To Know (recorded May 2006)

This is the original Roland version of the song that I re-recorded for the “Beneath The Trees” album. This version sounds like Ween playing Maggot Brain.

04. Escape (recorded March 2000)

My version of the Alice Cooper classic.

05. Goodbye My Friend (recorded September 2000)

I originally wrote and recorded this song on the 4 Track in late ‘96. I decided it needed a full on re-recording and I ended up re-arranging it, changing the key, and generally making it a bit heavier. **this song only survives as a 192 kpbs MP3, so even on the 320 kpbs full album download, this one will still be 192.

06. Bury Them Deep (recorded February 2001)

Hmmm, I’m running out of things to say about my songs. This is another slice of psychedelic pop.

07. The Missing Piece (recorded October 2000)

This is my attempt to do a Good Vibrations Beach Boys style type of song. I think I broke out the $50 Casio for the keyboard part on this one trying to get that cheap 60’s organ sound. This is also one of about 20 songs I have that feature recorded bong hits. You can never have enough bong hits in your music.

08. Frozen Inside (recorded September 2000)

This song features a lot of experimentation with the digital equivalent of slowing the tape down a whole step while concurrently playing the guitar part through a whammy pedal an octave down. When you run things back at normal speed it makes for an odd sound. Lots of other weird experimentation with noise going on in this one as well, but even with all that, it’s still quite musical and melodic…. and funky.

09. I Am Free (recorded September 2000)

A nice little minute and a half slice of fuzzed out psychedelia that originally served as sort of a prelude to “The Kind” on the 23 album.

10. Good Weed (recorded September 2000)

Sort of a follow up to “My Bong Is Lonely” except that it’s full on funk and features my Cameo voice. This was a favorite of an old black cab driver friend of mine named Gigi. He told me I could funk pretty good for a white boy. It’s still pretty white. But at least it’s funkier than “Play That Funky Music”.

11. Sidewalks (recorded October 2003)

I was offered a deal to record 5 minute instrmental pieces for $50 a pop by someone who wanted to use them to score some online porno scenes. I rattled off about 10 of them in an afternoon thinking I’d made an easy $500 but then the deal fell through. While several of the pieces were of the boom-chicka-boom-chicka-wah-wah typical 70’s porn soundtrack variety, this one actually sounds more like Jeff Beck’s “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” but it still could have worked for a nice romantic tender fuck scene, I think.

12. Sleeping Pill (recorded January 2006)

The original version with the original lyrics of the song that was eventually recorded for the Telestrion album.

13. Broken Road (recorded May 2006)

An odd little song that I wrote at the same time as “Together We Are Free” and “I Wanted You To Know” but decided not to record for the “Beneath The Trees” album because I didn’t think I could do it any better than I did it here. This might be what it would sound like if Roy Wood joined Ween or something like that.

14. That Night In Cleveland (recorded October 2003)

This is the true story of Plaster’s disastrous road trip to Ohio in 2001. Except for all the gay stuff which I added for comedic effect. This is one of about three country songs I’ve ever written. If you are either gay or live in Cleveland or are a gay cop, you might be offended, but please don’t be because in truth I really love Cleveland and I love gay people and I love cops. So we’re all good.

15. Benji’s Last Dream (recorded December 2000)

Part of this song was actually recorded in April of 1999. I took the cool parts of an old song and wrote a new song around those cool parts. And instead of re-recording the cool parts, I just lifted them from the original recording. Features samples from one of those great old drug episodes of Dragnet, and lots of fun with vocoders and pitch shifting. Part of this song was re-used in Telestrion’s “Get Your Mind Out” several years later."
