Yuin Huzami is a Brisbane based, full-time artist, dedicated to many forms of culture. This devotion has manifested itself into numerous projects. For the past 7 years, Yuin has been the MC and co-producer for The Coalition Crew, released two albums and a couple of EP’s with his old band Solotaro. Additionally, he is an active graffiti artist who does workshops and murals around the country, and until recently, he was running an art gallery for street art.

Around about the age of 8, Yuin discovered hip hop and got into Public Enemy and Gang Starr, which opened his mind a lot to politics, crime and spirituality. Then, while painting graffiti, he met guys like Ken Oath and Lazy Grey back when Stopping All Stations was being recorded. “These were the guys who got me into rapping. I remember Ken saying, ‘you’re a smart ass Pete, why don’t you try writing a rap.’ Once I wrote that first rap that was it. I started making beats almost immediately and have been involved in the local scene ever since,” he explained.

Recently, Yuin Huz dropped his new album The Ripple Effect and although it has a long road ahead, it has been well received so far. “Already though, it has allowed me to connect with some amazing people across the planet. It seems to be resonating especially well with people who are looking for change and who are open-minded. People seem to be listening closely to what I’m talking about and getting a lot out of it” he said. His intention with the album is to help people see the problems we are facing as a species, and to hopefully put their energy toward solutions rather than remaining ignorant, apathetic and content with being an un-loved part of the system.

The lead single off The Ripple Effect is the track Huz Sane. The song was originally featured on the first Laneous and the Family Yah record, St. Ill Regal, but was pretty out there and way up the back of the album, so he felt that they should do a remix that would reach the hip hop community. Yuin decided to run with that as the single because while being passionate about all the messages on the album, he felt it was in the centre of things topically and would represent the album as a whole to an extent. “I do think that everyone can relate to it though. Drug use is a very diverse area and there’s a lot of propaganda and misconception surrounding the topic. Too many doctors are prescribing harmful chemicals to people that have been approved by corrupt and greedy corporations. Meanwhile natural medicines are being demonised and outlawed despite their proven benefits and superior function,” he added.

Yuin says, “Brissy has always had a lot of amazing artists in all fields and you can really know everyone in the scene there and everyone mostly gets along. It’s easy to be a big fish in a little tank here though, so it is good to see people pushing a little harder of late.” One thing he attributes this to, is the label Born Fresh. He feels that the label unites a lot of Brisbane artists and highlights the talents we have in the same ways that Elefant Traks has for Sydney, Obese for Melbourne and Golden Era for Adelaide. “That’s a big step and I take my hat off to DJ Butcher and Tommy Illfigga for that,” he added.

Yuin Huz is taking a well deserved break from the local scene, and is on holiday at the moment. “I’m currently in Mexico City (loving it) and travelling down to Peru to work with traditional shamanic plant medicines in the Amazon for 3 months (research that if you like). It sounds pretty extreme, but the benefits I have already experienced here in Mexico from sacred medicines, despite being very challenging on many levels, have been incredibly joyful and of immense value to my health and happiness,” he explained. Furthermore, he feels he is gaining a great appreciation for the shamanic music used in healing ceremonies around the world. These experiences are inspiring him a lot for the next album and he hopes to create music with maximum positive impact for the listener.

In closing, Yuin tells us to keep our eyes peeled for a Yuin Huzami/Ironlak film clip collaboration in the near future. He also wants you to create your own reality, think with your heart, and hold your intentions strong as you manifest your future. “Wake up from the fake reality constructed around you … Life is filled with lessons, all of which are teaching you about unity and oneness,” he told.
