In a manner similar to the machinations of dreams, Fact Pattern represents, in Umberto Eco’s words, a sort of “hunting” project, a “metaphorical process of resemblance” that attempts to “establish a continuity between” seemingly disparate events, ideas and musical modalities. In this sense Fact Pattern behaves as a mechanism of “self defense against disorder,” as Brent States suggests dreams do, even though to say so would ostensibly deny the paradoxical ways in which Flux’s project’s mode of defense is to internalize disorder, incorporating it into the very fabric of its being rather than shunning and repressing it. Articulating itself through fanciful and ornate re-imaginings of ambient, industrial and dirge metal, Fact Pattern’s first output, Floor of the City, nonetheless maintains a hopeful, even playful ethos. Taken together, the album, all we currently have to go by when engaged in the futile attempt to account sonically for just what Fact Pattern truly is, masterfully alludes to its influences without being limited to them, alternately bursting forth in malicious fits of rage then placidly retreating into soft and finely woven cloths of sound, making and exploring patterns all the while. -Chris Potts Read more on Last.fm.
