Poetry ‘n Lotion (PnL) is a instrumental fusion quintet out of Tampa, FL. “The instrumental foursome has evolved their old-meets-new brand of acoustic jazz and bluegrass into a plugged-in sound that incorporates elements of hard, psychedelic and progressive rock, roots reggae, samba, gypsy jazz, ragtime, and even Irish folk music…Poetry ‘n Lotion fuses all the right elements with seeming ease.” – Leilani Polk, Creative Loafing
Over the years the band has gone through several lineup changes while developing their unique sound of southern instrumental fusion along the way. The band currently consists of Kenny Pullin on Trumpet & Effects, Alex Fedele on Trombone & Percussion, Matt E Lee on guitar & synthesizers, Thomas Murray on bass and John Nowicki on Drums. PnL has kept themselves busy since Kenny joined the band in late 2010 – performing 3 classic albums in their entirety, playing an official SXSW showcase, headlining Tampa Tribune’s Friday Extra Concert Series at Curtis Hixon Park, a closing set at the 30th Annual Tropical Heatwave…all the while, the foursome has been busy writing and crafting their unique blend of instrumental fusion. What began back in 2006 as a whiskey-swilling acoustic trio has now evolved into a no-nonsense eclectic trumpet-led assault of progressive instrumentalism.
PnL has just finished recording & mixing their second LP “Electric Acres”, which the band will be releasing in the Summer of 2013. The first single “Octopoda” was released on September 13, 2012 to great reviews. The new album is compromised of 10 originals, 5 old songs that have been performed and road tested as well 5 new songs that have yet to see the stage. PnL members can also be found performing w/ other local bands such as John Nowicki (solo), Brahm Bones, D’Visitors, Auto!Automatic!!, Magadog, Gwan Massive, Pale Orchestra, Rose Connelly, Flat Stanley, Toast, Florida Night Heat, Will Quinlan, Tribal Style, and Rocksteady@8.
In 2009 the band earned a few Creative Loafing Best of the Bay awards in 2009 – a Critic’s Choice award for “Best Fusionists” and Reader’s Choice for “Best Instrumentalists”. Their debut LP, Kentucky Monkey (2010/Brokenmold Records), was released in January of 2010 and received stellar reviews from various local publications. Poetry ‘n Lotion was mentioned in the 2011 A.V. List for “The Year in Band Names” under the ??? category. Besides the new album drop PnL continues to perform & recently made the top 10 featured artists in the Tampa Bay Times 2012 Ultimate Band Guide.
