London based indie REB artist, Mimikat, shines on her upcoming debut EP 'Where it Started". Sheffield born and Singapore/Hong Kong raised, "Mimi" is a reference to her infatuation with Mariah Carey from the age of five, as well as a Mandarin colloquialism for smile, whilst “kat” was inspired by her first real audience, a singular neighbourhood cat that would stroll up to the window of her childhood home while she practiced violin. Born with a natural talent, Mimikat recalls singing from the age of three, penning songs and poetry by the age of 9, and eventually uploading her originals and covers to Soundcloud during uni, notably D'Angelo's “Really Love”. Following a noise complaint one summer afternoon, Mimikat joined forces with her neighbour turned collaborator, labelhead whizz kid Azekel. By early 2020, Mimikat's debut EP “Where It Started” was born via Thunderlightning Recordings - a vibrant body of work that explores the inner conflict, abundant joy and expansive freedom that comes with navigating the years of our early 20s. Mimikat sets the stage with her first single “Days n Nights”, a cool, melodious introduction to her sweet girl-next-door aesthetic and dazzling vocals. A bittersweet and honest reflection on the loss of a friendship, the single is reminiscent of the likes of Omar Apollo.
