After years of playing solo acoustic shows, at the end of 2005 Joel Michalak created Therapy Session® in the attempt to stop being pegged as a folk singer/songwriter. He got on board with the breaking new website at the time, "Myspace" and created a band page. He started recording demo's in his bedroom trying to capture an idea of the sound he wanted for the band. He busked on the streets of Hollywood and handed out demos trying to find the right members to join the band.

Since then, there have been enough people through the band to make 7 or 8 complete bands. The live show has almost never had a consistent line up and recordings are littered with guest appearances by friends. Michalak has remained the only constant member and not only does he write the songs and perform most of the instrumentation, but is also credited with doing all the recording, mixing, mastering and even made the bands music videos and the album artwork himself.

Therapy Session's music has been compared to an array of artists and genres, which is due to the emotional range and dynamic of the band, but is mostly compared to folk and alternative rock. What is consistent about Therapy Session is Michalak's honest songwriting, profound lyrics and enchanting voice all packaged into catchy melodies and sprinkled with pop sensibility.
