Founded in 1991//Classic dark albums like LEAP (1998) and dEcAdEnT (2002)//Coldwave with Joy Division influences, long before Interpol or Editors :-)

Spiral of Silence (B) played with bands such as Gary Numan, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cranes, Front 242, Chameleons, Das Ich, Xymox, The Creatures, DAF, Nina Hagen, etc. Their music is often described as post-punk wave, coldwave rock and sometimes even pop...

The Spiral of Silence-story goes way back. It all started in August 1991: a couple of friends started a band called THEATRE OF PAIN. Mainly influenced by icons such as JOY DIVISION and BAUHAUS, Theatre of Pain toured for a couple of years in Belgium. They recorded a few demos who did well in the 'underground' circuit. Whether they agreed or not, they received the status of "Belgian Joy Division". "Beautiful Money" was a modest hit on alternative radio shows in Italy. Unfortunately, November 1st 1994, guitar player Bart Auwaerts committed suicide. Age 18. The band lost a friend and a non-replaceable musician. They decided to continue, using another name... SPIRAL OF SILENCE.

In 1995, a second demo was recorded: "Connection". It contained a cover version of Joy Division's "Atmosphere" which was a modest success on alternative radio in and around Europe. Thanks to Connection, Spiral was contacted by the Italian label Energeia Records. In 1998 they recorded a first CD, LEAP, containing new material and a collection of older demo-songs. LEAP meant a final breakthrough for Spiral of Silence. It includes 5 re-mastered songs ('93-'95) and 3 new songs produced by Jeff Schmitt (he worked with artists like Michael Giles (King Crimson) and Peter Gabriel).

Spiral played shows at VOORUIT (Ghent) and appeared a few times on the biggest alternative festival in Belgium: EUROROCK, together with bands such as Gary Numan and Echo & the Bunnymen. They also made their appearance on Germany's biggest alternative festival, Leipzig Gothic Treffen, in front of 10.000 people! They supported The Cranes at VK (Brussels).

September 2002 Spiral of Silence released its second full album: dEcAdEnT. It was co-produced by Antonio Palermo, guitarist for the legendary SIGLO XX and Kloot Per W (Belgian godfather of rock). Also Metal Molly's Allan Muller produced some tracks (Metal Molly scored a hit with their track "Orange"; they did support act for David Bowie). Keyboard player Jeroen Nuyts was replaced by Bart Callaerts. This was definitely a new impulse for the band. Bart's analogue sounds and crazy sequences make the band sound better than ever... And then there was silence... In 2003, SPOS played the INIT club in Rome. A great gig... but the last one until November 2007... The band members said goodbye at the airport (something like "...see you next week..."), but didn't play for 4 long years in order to spend time on family and careers. Bart and Achiel released some material with their electropop band Rekash (Play It Again Sam), but no Spiral activities.

In November 2007 the band played their first gig in more than 4 years at a local club and did a show in London.

As of 2008, Achiel (drums) left Spiral of Silence to concentrate on his new project Vox 'n Jacks (acid house, electro) and Spiral of Silence was once again on non-active. Tom en Gert continued as 'MOBCTRL', with Jeke Pelgrims on rythm guitar.

In the Summer of 2013, Tom, Gert and Achiel gathered again. New plans... a new beginning... with Jeke Pelgrims on rythm guitar... and new gigs... Back for good? Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
