Bobby Collins aka Spaceflight Orchestra has been a musician for most of his life. At the pre-pubescent age of 10 he found an old Melbay guitar in his step dad’s basement and thus his musical foundation was founded with the first dissonant strum. Eight years later he picked up an old electric bass. Three years after that he began taking piano lessons. Five years passed and he bought a sitar and began lessons under an A-list sitarist and Bollywood film composer from India. Three months after that he purchased his first set of turntables. Two years later he bought a theremin and decided to stop purchasing any new musical instruments for awhile.

The last six years have found him spending many a lonely night locked in his room practicing on his turntables and producing various tracks for his own amusement. He also spent much of that time working at a post-production studio in his hometown of Denver. It was here that he honed his compositional skills while writing music and jingles for commercials, documentaries, short films and corporate videos. For a while he enjoyed making children’s music for adults with his band The Bobby Collins Death Metal Armada. He headed up the band and played guitar, synths, vocoder and theremin, but his interest in DJing and producing got the best of him.

In 2007 Bobby Collins signed with the Black Bridge recording label as the producer behind his alter-ego, Spaceflight Orchestra. His track “Mellotronic” saw its national release on Black Bridge’s first release, “Pangea Organics’ Natural Selection” compilation alongside national artists Bassnectar, Cosmic Rocker and DJ Harry. Properlychilled.com called his track “Mellotronic” a downtempo classic. Two SFO songs were recently selected for the soundtrack of the upcoming indie film, “Suburban”. Last spring he remixed NYC artist and In Flagranti member, Cosmic Rocker on Black Bridge’s second release, “Cosmic Rocker: Action Breaks EP”. The track was charted by J-Boogie in his Summer ‘08 Top Twenty and also found it’s way into champion art crew HVW8’s “Live at the BBQ” mix.

Spaceflight Orchestra’s debut album, “An Orchestra Of One”, is due out in January 2009. The album will cover a wide range of sonic territory and the following single will also feature remix work by J-Boogie of Om Records as well as Germany’s own Quincy Jointz and many more. SFO is currently in the studios working on his next album with King Scratchie of Denver punk legends, Warlock Pinchers.

Spaceflight Orchestra has recently introduced live sets with the album, “An Orchestra Of One” and other SFO tracks being recreated from the ground up using turntables, keys, effects processors and theremin. The live sets have taken SFO’s lush, sonorous sound even further with the addition of new elements. Read more on Last.fm.
