Michael Sullivan, born Ivanilton de Souza Lima (March 9, 1950 in Recife, Brazil), is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, lyricist and guitarist.
A composer, singer, musician, and producer, Michael Sullivan is considered the most prolific and successful Brazilian songwriter of all time, with more than 2000 recorded songs by Brazilian, Hispanic and Global artists, released in 60 markets in Latin and North Americas, Europe, Asia and Middle East regions.
Throughout his career, Sullivan has performed in successful groups such Renato e seus Blue Caps and The Fevers, and as a solo artist in multiple genres from ballads to gospel and has sold 60 million albums and received 60 Diamond, 270 Platinum and 550 Gold awards, inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall Of Fame at the 7th annual La Musa Awards.
Many of the songs composed by Sullivan were big hits and became classics of Brazilian musical history - but because they were performed by leading Brazilian artists, Sullivan is not immediately recognized as the author by the public. A series by GloboPlay subscription channel, an affiliate of the main Brazilian channel Globo TV planned for 2022-2023 might finally give Sullivan and his musical partner Paulo Massada the recognition they deserve for having penned so many hits through life.
Background
Sullivan began his career at the age of 14 singing on Recife's nightlife. At 15, he participated in some freshman contests such as Varieté, by Nilson Lins on Rádio Jornal do Commercio. He won first place and received the award, a professional ID of the Ordem dos Músicos do Brasil and a contract with TV Jornal do Comercio and thus, he began his singing career, in the programs of the station Você faz o Show, Noite de Black-Tie and Bossa 2, consecrated since then as a State of Pernambuco revelation.
At the age of seventeen, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he met Hyldon (with whom he composed his first song in 1965), Renato Piau (guitarist who worked with Tim Maia) and Tinho (saxophonist and arranger who worked with Tim Maia and one of the founders of Banda Vitória Régia). They then formed the group Os Nucleares, which had its first recording in 1969 on vinyl by RCA.
He got to know Cassiano and Tim Maia - with whom he learned to play guitar.
At nineteen he joined the group Os Selvagens, and at the age of 21, the group Renato e seus Blue Caps as a singer and guitarist. His passage through this band resulted in six gold records - its sales reached more than 1 million records.
In the 1970s, Michael Sullivan was part of a group of Brazilian singers that recorded in English - they were called "False Importados" (“False Imports”).
While still with the band Renato and his Blue Caps, Michael Sullivan started his solo career with the song “My Life“ (his second composition), which was part of the soundtrack of the soap opera ”O Casarão” on Globo TV - the main TV channel in the country. The single became one of the best sellers in the country for the phonographic market, surpassing the mark of 1 million copies, equivalent to a Diamond Record.
In 1978, he released the LP “Um Mundo Melhor Pro Meu Filho” through Capitol Records, and in 1979, the LP “Michael Sullivan” through K-Tel record company.
Sullivan & Massadas
After his time as a vocalist in two of Brazil’s most popular groups: Renato e seus Blue Caps and The Fevers (from 1980 to 1986), Sullivan entered a fruitful partnership with Paulo Massadas, composing a juggernaut of songs with easy appeal, which would dominate the Brazilian charts in the 80s.
They met in 1979 in a show they both performed. Massadas was a frequent partner of his compositions spanning over 19 years. The duo is responsible for several hit songs. They began writing for the northeastern Jangada label, owned by EMI-Odeon, and later for artists of the [artst]brega style, such as Evaldo Freire, Reginaldo Rossi, Adílson Ramos and José Augusto.
The first success written by the duo and recorded by another artist was the huge hit "Me Dá Motivo", recorded in the voice of Brazilian giant Tim Maia. The song is now a classic of Brazilian music history.
After Tim, dozens of others artists recorded the duo compositions - such as Gal Costa ("Um Dia de Domingo"), Fagner ("Deslizes"), outfit Roupa Nova ("Whisky a Go Go"), among others.
In 1988, the partnership made the album “Sullivan e Massadas” by the RCA BMG Ariola label with the participation of Sergio Mendes and Jermaine Jackson.
In 1989, the duo composed the opening title for the popular Sunday show “Domingão do Faustão”. by presenter Fausto Silva at Globo TV for Som Livre, “Do tempo que”, the first time the show had its own opening song.
The duo’s success suffered strong criticism by music writers, who considered their music purely commercial - which ended up rating negatively the artists that agreed to record songs written by them.
In 1990, the live album “Sullivan e Massadas ao vivo” was released, recorded at the SUAM theater, with hits by the duo released by the Som Livre label.
In 1992, continuing his solo career, Michael Sullivan released the CD “Talismã”, considered a critical success in his solo career.
In 1994, after 19 years, the duo disbanded.
Sullivan greatest commercial success in English was the single "My Life", re-recorded by the pop singer Sandy. The single sold more than 1 million copies.
Sullivan released additional albums through 1995 and 2010 - including a Duets release, and two live albums.
Tribute Album
In 2013, ”Mais Forte Que o Tempo” (Stronger than Time), a studio tribute album was released, celebrating 30 years of Sullivan’s authorial success. Featuring some of the main Brazilian artists, the album has re-recordings and covers of Sullivan’s greatest hits. Some of the hits were composed together with Massadas, and all of them were recorded for album. The album was released on December 10, 2013 by Sony Music on iTunes.
The first song is a cover of "Mê Dá Motivo", originally with Tim Maia and re-recorded by Adriana Calcanhotto.
"Amor Perfeito", previously sung by Roberto Carlos, is re-released by Ney Matogrosso. Jorge Vercillo sings "Nem um Toque", originally recorded in Rosana’s voice.
The song “Um Dia de Domingo” was recorded by Gal Costa, but in this version the original voice of Tim Maia, who passed in 1998, was also preserved.
Additional artists paying tribute to Sullivan in the album include: Fernanda Takai, Roberta Sá, Pedro Mariano, Zélia Duncan, Fagner, Zeca Baleiro, Negra Li, Paulinho Moska, Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown re-recording the hit “Whiskey a Go Go”, originally recorded by the group Roupa Nova. The hit single “My Life” with Sandy was also added to the tribute.
TV Series production
In 2022, GloboPlay, the subscription service of Rede Globo TV channel, the most popular channel in Brazil, has announced the production of a series about the duo Sullivan & Massadas. Written by journalists André Barcinski and Pedro Bial, the series will showcase the history of the duo, getting together for the first time in 27 years for a tribute with artists such as Fagner, Sandra de Sá and Alice Caymmi, Anavitória and Ferrugem.
One of the authors, Bercinski, said people were now able to value the duo who has always been behind the songs, and recognized them their work whereas he felt people made fun of them before.
In 2022, at age 72, with his “false gringo from Pernambuco” persona, Sullivan said the series will tell stories “no one knows about”, including on their separation, which didn’t include a reason beyond the usual wear and tear of artists working together for long periods of time.
Sullivan also planned to release a new album, “Ivanilton” - his birth name - an album with previously unreleased songs produced by Alice Caymmi including performances by herself and Ana Carolina, Fagner, Almério and Johnny Hooker.
Reflecting back on his carer, Sullivan mentioned that other artists would complain that they were one of the few artists given space in the industry, but he believes that from the 1980s through 1990 there was space for everyone. We even had a campaign going on so that radio stations would include the names of the artists composing the lyrics and arrangements.
